About Prostate Gland

What is Prostate Gland ?         

The Prostate is a walnut - sized gland that forms part of the male reproductive syatem. The gland is made of two lobs, or regions enclosed by an outer layer of tissue. The prostate is located in front of the rectum and just below the bladder, where urine is stored. The Prostate also surrounds the urethra, the canal through which urine passes out of the body.

Symptoms of Prostate         

Due to the location of prostate, BPH causes a number of urinary symptoms. The prostate is located just below where tje bladder empties into the urethra (which is a thin tube that carries urine from the bladder, through the penis, to outside the body). As the prostate enlarges, it impinges the flow of urine through the urethra.

The Most common symptoms are         

›  Pushing or straining to begin urination.
›  Recurrent, Sudden, Urgent need to urinate.
›  Leakage of urine (i.e., overflow incontinence).
›  Hesitant, interrupted, or weak urine stream caused by decreased force.
›  Frequent urination, particularly at night (i.e., necturia).
›  Feeling that the bladder has not emptied completely after urination.
›  Dribbling after voiding.
›  MBlood in the urine (i.e., hematuria), caused by straining to void.
 

How Can BPH be treated ? 

Lumenis 100 watt Holmium laser Treatment

It is the latest modality used in the managementof Enlarged Prostate. In this procedure, 55o Micro Fiber attached to a Lumenis 100-watt Holmium Laser machine is used to remove obstructive Prostatic tissue and seal blood vessels. The enculeated gland is then pushed into the bladder, which is later sucked out with the help with a equipment called Morcellator. The whole Procedure takes arround 45-90 minutes, depending on the size of the gland. Size is not the limiting factor for HoLEP, largest gland enucleated in india till date is 256 gms at Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute (PSRI Hospital).

HoLEP procedure is nearly bloodless as the laser beam when cuts the gland also seals the blood vessels. At the end of the surgery, a catheter is inserted to keep the bladder empty. The catheter is usually kept for 24 to 48 hours and the patient is discharged without catheter after giving a catheter free trail.
